5 Tips To Advance Your Procurement Career in 2023

You'll agree with me that climbing the ‘procurement industry ladder is not a day's job but a series of intentional steps you have to take.

In other words, you certainly can’t afford to leave your growth as a procurement professional to chance.

As the new year approaches, don’t focus only on setting personal goals but also make plans to advance your career come 2023.

As the popular saying goes… you can't expect to have different results when you keep doing the same thing.

That said, here are 5 top tips to help you advance your procurement career in 2023;

📍Submit to Mentorship: Having a mentor is one of the easiest ways to advance your career because you won't have to make some of the mistakes your mentor made. A mentor will provide guidance and motivation for handling work challenges, and guide you in negotiating and engaging better with stakeholders among several other things. Although it can sometimes be difficult to get access to these mentors, many of whom tend to be super busy, it's always so worth it in the end.

📍 Make The Most Of What You Have: Let's say you weren't able to get a Mentor for one reason or the other, don't despair. Instead, make the best use of what you have access to. Many of these busy mentors have resources you can easily access and develop yourself with. Whether it's a YouTube channel, online course, or just their daily posts on their social media handles, you can always avail yourself of valuable information that will help your career growth.

📍Make Networking A Priority: Thankfully, you don't have to attend all the physical events available. There are several online conferences, webinars, and the like that you can join and learn from. Also, look out for communities with other procurement professionals where you can learn from others’ experiences and share yours. Always look for ways to make a valuable contribution if there's an opportunity for that, as it will help bring your attention to other like-minded people.

📍Actively Leverage LinkedIn Connections: On LinkedIn, you can connect with tons of procurement professionals and if you want to be seen by the right audience, then you have to learn to optimize your profile, show up with your content, and engage with these top professionals in the procurement field. Don’t just like their posts; leave a comment, share your insights on the topic, or re-share to your network.

📍Keep Honing Your Skills: To advance as a procurement professional, you need to keep working on enhancing both your hard and soft skills. Skills like communication, time management, critical thinking and problem solving, negotiation, conflict resolution, self-motivation, and the ability to work under pressure are non-negotiable, and will take you places that hard skills alone won’t.

By following these tips, not only would you advance your career as a procurement professional, but you would also become that better you.

May 2023 bring you better opportunities, network, and abundant finances.

Cheers to a glorious year 🥂
